International Studies

Study Abroad

There are many ways to gain credit for international study, either for a semester or a full academic year. For details and conditions, visit the Centre for International Experience (CIE) at Cumberland House, 33 St. George Street.

International Course Modules (ICM)

International Course Modules (ICM) is a great way to enhance your course learning by participating in an international experience. In each 0.5 or 1.0 credit ICM course, a small number of students can travel outside Toronto for immersive, course-related, faculty-led experiences during either the Fall or Winter Reading Week. The Faculty of Arts & Science covers travel and living expenses for students and faculty.

Several opportunities exist for Political Science students to combine travel with study. However, students should note that Political Science courses do not contain an international module every year. Not all Political Science courses, moreover, contain an ICM. If you are interested in undertaking one, you should speak to an instructor and/or contact the undergraduate office. For more information visit the Faculty of Arts & Science website.

ICM courses, applications, and deadlines will be posted in late summer.

As an ICM student, you can:

  • Strengthen your ability to draw connections between theoretical course concepts and your ICM experience
  • Gain a deeper understanding of complex concepts, ideas, information, and perspectives
  • Gain meaningful experiences that can help with your applications for jobs, graduate studies, professional faculties, and volunteer roles
  • Bond with fellow students and instructors and build a stronger network of professional support

ICMs are open to students in any year, but you are limited to the courses that offer an IICM component. To be eligible, you should be:

  • A full-time undergraduate degree student in the Faculty of Arts & Science — St. George campus (exchange or non-degree students are not eligible to receive ICM funding)
  • In good academic standing
  • Enrolled in the course the ICM is part of

ICMs are covered through your regular tuition fees. Each student selected to travel during Reading Week is asked to pay $200 (which can be raised through group fundraising events) to help offset travel costs.

Summer Abroad

Students may also participate in Summer Abroad, which has been run for 40 years by Woodsworth College. This program enables students to take History courses in the country under study for 1 FCE. These are accelerated Y courses undertaken in six weeks from June to August. Host countries range from England and France to Israel and Hong Kong. A different menu of courses is offered every year.
