Building on its rich tradition, Political Science at the University of Toronto invites students to explore politics in its complexity and diversity, guided by the rigorous curiosity that characterizes one of the largest scholarly communities of its kind in the world.
Our core mission is to encourage our students to think broadly about politics and policy in a rapidly changing world. Dating back to the 1880s, the Department now has a total faculty complement of over ninety across the three campuses of the University of Toronto. We offer courses at all levels in political philosophy and theory, Canadian politics, international relations and global affairs, comparative politics, development studies, public policy, indigenous studies, and research methods.
Our PhD program is the largest and most prestigious in Canada. Graduates have gone on to pursue successful careers throughout the world. We also offer a popular MA program. On the St. George campus alone, each year a couple of hundred undergraduate students typically enroll in our Specialist programs, well over a thousand in our Major program, and several hundred in our Minor program. Many more are regularly admitted to cognate programs - including at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, the Faculty of Law, the School of the Environment, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health - and to a full range of courses on our other two campuses - University of Toronto at Mississauga and University of Toronto at Scarborough.
Members of our Department publish many books every year with the world’s best presses. Their articles appear in top journals and other venues aimed at informing public opinion. They continue to receive distinguished Canadian and international awards in their fields.
In the middle of a dynamic city, the Department provides a vibrant and open forum for students, faculty, and visitors. Come and join us!
