Nancy Bertoldi

Bertoldi’s research explores alternative conceptions of global justice and world order in ancient, modern, and contemporary political thought. Her publications bridge political theory and international relations. Her articles have addressed the thought of Thucydides, John Locke, Charles Beitz, Stanley Hoffmann, John Rawls, and Iris Young. Her current book project develops a civic conception of global justice that can address the challenges of poverty and inequality as they arise in a plural world. Her work pays special attention to the role of practices of collective justification in the construal of fairness claims and the importance of preserving avenues for global civil disobedience even within broadly just multilateral frameworks. Subsequent work will apply the theoretical framework developed in her book to concrete global debates over trade, health, and the environment to identify fair global governance mechanisms that can promote the principled moderation of power.
