Congratulations to UTM's Professor Menaka Philips, recipient of the 2024 Research Prize in the Social Sciences for her contributions to the study of a range of issues in historical and contemporary political thought, especially in the politics of interpretation.
Professor Philips is a political theorist who works on a range of issues in historical and contemporary political thought. She is especially interested in the politics of interpretation. Her latest book, The Liberalism Trap: John Stuart Mill and Customs of Interpretation (Oxford University Press, 2023), which examines how attention to liberalism shapes interpretive practices in political theory, received the Canadian Political Science Association's 2024 C.B. Macpherson Prize. Her work has been published in outlets like the European Journal of Political Theory, Signs: Journal for Women in Culture and Society, the American Political Science Review, and the Washington Post.
The UTM Annual Research Prizes were established in 2016 by the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation and UTM’s Research Council to recognize outstanding contributions of early career researchers and scholars in the Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.
The 2024 Research Prize recipients will be recognized at UTM's Annual Research Prize Symposium on February 4 where this year's winners will discuss their work.

Other prize recipients this year include:
- Professor Nilanjan Das (Department of Philosophy) who received the research prize in the Humanities for his contributions to the fields of epistemology and Sanskrit philosophy.
- Professor Nicole Novroski (Department of Anthropology, Forensic Science Program) who received the research prize in the Sciences for her contributions to the advancement of forensic DNA typing and analysis using novel biological and instrumentation approaches.
